A fault code doesn’t yet mean the unit or sensor itself is faulty: often it’s the plug and connector leading to it.
Possible causes
- Knock sensor or its wiring — the most common cause
- Outdated engine control unit firmware
- Worn connecting rod bearings, engine knock
What you can do yourself
- Don’t clear the code without finding the cause: it protects the engine from serious damage.
- If Check Engine is flashing or the engine knocks — stop the engine and call a tow truck.
- If it’s on steadily — you can carefully drive to a workshop without load or high RPM.
- Ask a Hyundai or Kia dealer whether there is a firmware update or service campaign for your car.
Stop and don’t drive on if:
- The Check Engine light is flashing
- The temperature gauge is in the red or the overheating light is on
- The red oil pressure light is on
- Smoke from under the bonnet, a burning or petrol smell
- Strong jerking, knocking from the engine, or the car barely moves
