A fault code doesn’t yet mean the unit or sensor itself is faulty: often it’s the plug and connector leading to it.
Possible causes
- The fan doesn’t spin or spins weakly: worn fan motor
- Fan relay or fuse
- The radiator is clogged with dirt and poplar fluff on the outside
What you can do yourself
- Warm the engine up while parked until the fan should come on, and check that it spins. Watch the temperature gauge.
- Check the coolant and that the radiator fan works.
Stop and don’t drive on if:
- The Check Engine light is flashing
- The temperature gauge is in the red or the overheating light is on
- The red oil pressure light is on
- Smoke from under the bonnet, a burning or petrol smell
- Strong jerking, knocking from the engine, or the car barely moves

OA case from Oleg’s practice
- Range Rover 2014 On-site diagnostics, 211.000 km: stored fan control codes (P0480, P0483, P0528), oxygen sensor codes and P0420. After clearing, all modules were “green” — we advised driving for a few days and checking again: the codes that come back will show what really needs fixing. How it went ↗
The explanation comes from the error code reference in the AvtoElektrik PRO app.
