A fault code doesn’t yet mean the unit or sensor itself is faulty: often it’s the plug and connector leading to it.
Possible causes
- Thermostat stuck open — the engine doesn’t warm up
- The sensor reads wrong
- Low coolant, air lock around the sensor
What you can do yourself
- Check the coolant level.
- Compare the temperature on the scanner with the gauge on the dashboard.
Stop and don’t drive on if:
- The Check Engine light is flashing
- The temperature gauge is in the red or the overheating light is on
- The red oil pressure light is on
- Smoke from under the bonnet, a burning or petrol smell
- Strong jerking, knocking from the engine, or the car barely moves

OA case from Oleg’s practice
- Volkswagen Polo 2021 The fan runs all the time, active code P011600 — implausible temperature sensor signal. The sensor readings are normal — the contacts in its connector had corroded. We cleaned the contacts, the fan works as it should, and the sensor wasn’t replaced. How it went ↗
The explanation comes from the error code reference in the AvtoElektrik PRO app.
