A fault code doesn’t yet mean the unit or sensor itself is faulty: often it’s the plug and connector leading to it.
Possible causes
- Low voltage: a flat battery or corroded terminals
- Power or ground of this control unit (fuse)
- The unit’s connector: corrosion, water ingress, not fully seated or a broken latch
- CAN bus wires chafed or damaged after a repair or an accident
- The control unit itself
- The unit was replaced recently but not coded to the car
What you can do yourself
- While the airbag light is on, the airbags may not deploy in a crash.
- Crash sensors sit at the front, in the doors or in the body pillars: the code often appears after an accident or a bumper, door or body repair.
- Only touch airbag connectors (usually yellow) with the ignition off and the negative battery terminal disconnected — better leave it to a technician.
- The letter (A, B, C…) is the unit’s number for this make: a scan tool that reads all units or the wiring diagram will show which unit it is.
- Check the battery and terminals: at low voltage control units lose communication.
- Write the codes down, clear them and check again: after a flat battery, a repair or voltage spikes, codes that are no longer current stay in memory.
- If only this unit has lost communication, check its fuse, ground and connector. If several units show communication codes at once, look for a common cause: the battery, a ground, the CAN bus wires.
Stop and don’t drive on if:
- The instrument panel went dark or many warning lights came on at once
- Power steering is gone or the brakes don’t work as usual
OOleg’s tip: check the connector
Often the cause is simple — there is no contact in the connector (plug). Look at the connector from the back: remove the rubber seal and you will see whether a wire is corroded or has come off completely. Corrosion shows up as green deposits. Ideally, gently pull each wire towards you one at a time: a sound wire stays in place, while a corroded one simply comes off — it needs to be repaired.
Unplug and inspect connectors with the ignition off.
