A fault code doesn’t yet mean the unit or sensor itself is faulty: often it’s the plug and connector leading to it.
Possible causes
- Not enough fuel: low fuel in the tank, a weak fuel pump, a clogged filter
- An air leak, or the intake hoses and air filter not fitted back after a repair
- Misfires or a dirty throttle body
- High altitude in very hot weather (per a Lexus bulletin for the RX 450h)
What you can do yourself
- Check the fuel level: this code is often set when the tank is nearly empty.
- Check the air filter, its housing and the intake hoses: are they all in place and seated tightly.
- Look at the other engine codes — misfires, mixture, throttle: this code is often a consequence of them.
- Don’t touch the high-voltage parts (orange cables) — they are life-threatening.
Stop and don’t drive on if:
- The Check Engine light is flashing
- The temperature gauge is in the red or the overheating light is on
- The red oil pressure light is on
- Smoke from under the bonnet, a burning or petrol smell
- Strong jerking, knocking from the engine, or the car barely moves
A Toyota and Lexus hybrid code. This is the Toyota and Lexus meaning. On other makes this number means something else: if your car isn’t a Toyota or Lexus, change the make at the top.
