What you can do yourself
- If the engine pulls as usual, drive to a shop and read the trouble codes with a scan tool.
- If the engine has lost power or the rpm is hunting, slow down and don’t drive far: power is limited.
- Common causes are a dirty throttle body, the gas pedal sensor and the brake pedal switch. Check that the brake lights work.
Stop and don’t drive on if:
- The Check Engine light is flashing
- The temperature gauge is in the red or the overheating light is on
- The red oil pressure light is on
- Smoke from under the bonnet, a burning or petrol smell
- Strong jerking, knocking from the engine, or the car barely moves
